Yesterday i was driving to Huddersfield which is only about 30min drive and my engine temp needle was half way in the red by the time i got there!! my heaters were set to hot and it was giving out freezing cold air (which is good in a way because it was a hot day) got it back home luckily. today checked my radiator and the water level had dropped below the fins, i added some coolant in and water. going to huddersfield it was ok, only slightly over normal temp, on the way back home, needle was in red again, still giving out freezing cold air, startd smoking in a traffic jam. pulled over, opened the bonnet and the alternator was steaming and givin off smoke and there was a loud hissing sound from around that area.
could it be something to do with my thermostat? or the radiator? or anything???
please help
shaz

Once the car has overheated once the system will have air in it. This will need to removed and filled with water.
I find the best way to do this is to leave the engine off and filler cap off the radiator.
Then keep sqeezing the bottom radiator hose but keep topping up with water as the water level will drop.
Once the level remains constant, refit the cap and start the car.
Check for leaks.
You will need to check water level every day or risk overheating again.
p.s. it's not good to have a cold heater as this is the first indication of air in the system, ie no water!
