Today, while out buying parts for a mate mini, the car cut out.. I say cut out, id slowed down on a backstreet, was setting off in second (as i was still rolling) then it jsut lost laods of power and then stalled, (abit like if you set off in third..which i wasnt doing) fired it up again, tried setting off in first and it did the same again, looked behind me and there was a bit of a puddle of oil, but then no more oil came out, it wasnt constantly streaming or anything. the back of my engines covered in oil, cant tell whether its new or not, because ive never cleaned the back of my engine. There was a strong smell of oil too.
It then drove with the choke out for abit, but it wasnt running right, constantly missfiring. when i pulled up while i rang for a mates dad to come help,
after 40mins or so he came, put some more oil in it and then it fired up and drove home 8 miles fine.
Im think its the head gasget, however it might have over heated too?
ive got another radiotor waiting to go on.. how long would it take to re-place the head gasget do you think? would it be possible outside without a garage?
Cheers in advance for the help.

haha i might leave it then, it could just be the warm weather, and the fact the front wheel bearings loose so the brakes are probably rubbing on that side too, which will probs affect the temperature.
The cutting out the other day is a mystery though :/

I think the least you should do is change the thermostat...
mines spat a load of oil out before on the rolling road... turned out to be a blocked breather... hmmm

head gasket issues are usually there all the time once begun. Look for oil in water and water in oil. And possibly mayonnaise in rocker cover which suggests condensation in the oil.
Cutting out can be mechanical or electrical. Have you checked your carburettor dash pot? You should top it up with motor oil.
Are your vacuum pipes all connected?
Do you have loose wires on your coil?
There is usually a check list in your Haynes manual that you can refer to

And another thing... when did you last check your fuel filter?
Could be debris in fuel line, or float bowl

no need for a see through one, take one out, if its black, or wet, too rich, if its white, too lean if its kinda grey or browny then its right.
check your points too... backfires at the carb when they are wrong.
